So it is more of a problem coming from the denoising. Interesting.
I guess that is something the Blender devs can't fix?

Ok this might be an expected behaviour than. But it makes it hard to lets say paint a roughness value of 0.25 because if i set the value of 0.25 in attribute paint, the true value is way lower and results in lesser roughness than expected. The user has to compensate and choose a higher value during painting.
To me painting roghness maps with attribute (vertex) painting is super tricky.
I hope i don't sound confusing.

I am having a hard time replicating this clearly, can you attach the Suzanne example above?
Also, I am wondering if this this just a consequence of vertex interpolations, to see if this is the case, does inserting a Map Range with a Smooth Step interpolation make this better?

Latest version of Blender 3.2, Auto Depth disabled. Once i switch all viewports to vertex color the lag is gone.
Enabling just another color option brings back lags and Blender is unusable again. Enabling Auto Depth results in major lags independent from the color shading option - as known.

Reminder the problem only occurs when i import/load the config files from my previous Blender version. When i delete userpref.blend or start with a fresh Blender version the bug doesn't happen at all.

Looks like this is caused by Preferences > Naviagtion > Orbit & Pan > Auto Depth.
This is known to take a performance hit in certain scenarios.

The bug doesn't happen when i use a fresh blender 3.1 nightly and don't importing my 3.0 settings. I'll do more research and might be able to give more details soon.

Another side effect is a very very laggy viewport navigation in solid mode (at least on one of my bigger projects with over 4 million polygons).

Ok the bright dots are similar to the "T81089: Pointiness - wrong results with dense mesh and small scale" thread but the rectangular patterns are something else. I would like to have a dev to look over that issue.

Sorry for the delay! I've tried the blend file and it clearly shows the problem. The beveled areas should be dark too but instead they are bright. This makes it close to impossible to use the ao node for a crease or edge mask (for edge wear or dirty creases).
