I anything, such option should be in the Performance panel. The option is to be disabled by default, because, again, final shot is rendered once, re-iteration over the look of frame happens much more often.

Thanks - that all makes sense. In UI terms, these optimisations should not affect "time to first pixels", but obviously there is a cost to having up to 2 MTLCompilerService background processes running.

To nuance this a bit... Some constants are more likely to change than others, and may be specific to certain kernels only. For example, we see a nice uplift in the intersection kernels by specialising the "has motion blur" & "has curve" booleans, both of which are unlikely to change frequently. Furthermore, the intersection kernels are very fast to compile. So we could, say, always background-optimise the intersection kernels, or perhaps offer separate options for intersect vs shade optimisations (perhaps with different defaults)?

@Isaac Arias (ike) BMW is actually not a great test. After the BVH2 patch it is the only demo scene that is slower for me.
Monster under the bed, Classroom for example are faster.

sure here you go, this is how mine looks after switching to the shading tab and back.
In wireframe mode it is completely black and in material preview it looks ok.

Can't use the shader editor at all, switching with the dropdown in a window does make it crash and so does switching to the shading tab.

Same here, another thing I noticed is it only happens if there are different views/areas and it does not seem to matter what is in the area.
Just an example, happens on a setup like this too.

I believe a missing WITH_METAL define is preventing the Metal BVH setup case from executing which manifests as an assert in a debug build. Try this one-line patch: D13505

yes same issue only difference M1Pro (Termination Reason: Namespace SIGNAL, Code 11 Segmentation fault: 11), viewport or rendering makes no difference.
