@Martijn Berger (juicyfruit) no. Only @Cédric PAILLE (cedricp) did the implementation at dwarf using @Esteban Tovagliari (est) implementation (which we found on his blog) as a starting point. Another developer at dwarf (maxime robinot, not sure he has an account here) did finalize and clean the code those past few weeks so we could share it with you.

if using this operator is not possible, beside the facts that it shouldn't crash, we would also need a python function to set the hair system in edited mode via python.
for now, and AFAIK only this operator can set it in this mode.

sorry about all this, I tried we a build from buildbot, and it seems to work. We will double check our version then. I'll make more test next time.

Here it is :
1 - Go to edit mode
2 - Select a vertex
3 - Grow the proportional editing influence so it takes more than one vertex
4 - Deselect your vertex
5 - Reselect the vertex
6 - translate
- only the selected vertex moves
7 - change the proportional editing influence by 1 step (mouse wheel)
- all vertices moves.

I can confirm that we do have coplanar faces in our production mesh.
if we do add seams on each island and use a different transfer mode, would that work ?
