Id just like to say the problem still exists in 2.8 or when the new dependency graph is enabled. Its better kinda but still a problem

I have been using this in production for a few weeks now and it is pretty amazing how fast it makes rendering interiors, There are also certain cases when you can use it for stylized renders but since there is no option to disable it on glossy or make glossy have more bounces it is near useless in those scenarios

Are tangents supposed to be that slow? they are horribly slow with a decent sized scene 90% of the render is just computing tangents before the render.. well over 30 minutes in some of our cases. And then the real render (Post synchronization) takes like 2 minutes

SLI is never ever on, The GPU was idling around ~300 MB before the render, after the render the memory climbed up to 1225MB of 3072MB cycles gave the error and reported it was using 1287MB which is more than the total usage on Nvidia inspector. Thats all I have for that certain situation I will see if I can eventually replicate it.
The 970 has 4 GB of usable ram the 500 MB is just slower.

If you look at the image I linked I used a program to show how much memory was being used on the GPU so you can see the GPU only reaches 1225 MB of vram being used so it isnt that cycles is lying to us, it actually didnt make it to the GPU before it crashed.

In cycles the texture was half missing. As far as I can tell it was only at render.
We didnt see texture flickering in the view port (we always have it on solid shaded mode)

Here it is i did the pack thing lets hope it works. I was scrubbing through the animation (in the viewport) and saw a few flickers.
CPU and GPU render. the problem appears to be the view port which carries over to the render. give me a few and ill have the blend file up

If i had a scene full of procedural textures like this it wouldn't be able to be rendered in view port but if i switch border on it could fit. Why is that?

Your SLI is on click this to disable it.
Maybe this is an SLI problem... Do you have SLI enabled in your nvidia control panel ?

I always thought on windows all the end user had to do was install the driver... Ill install the driver from the nvidia website and let you know if that changes anything at all :D
Can that be acquired with a driver update?

i kept having huge performance drops when forcing aa with the nvidia control panel. but it only effected branched path tracing from what i could tell

@Diego Gangl (januz) Well i think the blender foundation tries to keep blender as small and as portable as possible if you are at the library trying to show off some work you don't want to install 3 different video players on the computer. All you would need is blender on a usb stick.
