I don't get performance gains on my setup, since those GPUs are so fast, that the CPU has no chance being helpful (by the time the GPUs have finished all other tiles of the image, the CPU is still working away on its first set of tiles).
But this patch is not supposed to address that yet, it only lays the groundwork and makes it possible for multiple devices with different BVH formats to render simultaneously. Improving tile management and the way tiles are mapped to kernel launches is something to be handled later.

Using CPU + GPU on my machine with a 3090 and a 3950x (32 thread CPU) making the tile size 32x32 is most optimal for the CPU but the GPU is basically wasted entirely at 32x32. We really need more tiles on the GPU. Tile stealing was a very slight improvement but not an optimal one in the slightest. Anything smaller than 512x512 on my 3090 is pointless especially in optix. if I were to use CPU + GPU im just adding 200 extra watts to the render and saving no time at all. A lot of the devs work on laptops and mid tier machines so it makes sense they see decent speedups on mid range hardware. I could get some big gains with CPU + GPU on my 1070 but its entirely pointless on a 3090. even though my CPU is roughly the speed of a 1080 it contributes nothing when the 3090 is restricted to 32x32.

It seems writing to a file or just throwing it in to nothingness does help a bit but I've been running CLI for a long time never really noticed a slowdown like this, Though lately I am trying to achieve sub 500ms renders for web related stuff which I can actually do in cycles without denoising.

Just chiming in to confirm that this is still very much a bug in Blender 2.82 using Mantaflow. Seems to appear in every single smoke animation.

Important to note:

  • It happens with or without noise
  • It's separate to the Z-fighting issue described in comments above.

Attached blend:

Cycles still makes an adaptive volume around the smoke but now you cant change the threshold which honestly makes a lot of renders not usable. :/ Your render appears to be shadows if you turn transparent bounces up to lets say 20 and minimum to 20 as well it may fix it

Seems the "empty space" feature doesn't exist anymore since manta flow implementation? If that is the case majority of smoke sims will be pretty broken in cycles renders

@Samarth kapoor (tiltanimation) Since your computer crashes this is most likely caused by the graphics driver. Please try the driver version suggested by @derek barker (lordodin) (441.66). If the crash is caused by the driver there's usually not much that we can do, except waiting for a patched version from the vendor.

@Jeroen Bakker (jbakker) Does this issue with an RTX card and the current driver version sound familiar?

The plan is to let each GPU render many small tiles at once. Different tile sizes or subdivision would still constrain the tile shape to be rectangular which doesn't always fit well.

On some of the larger scenes that I threw at it on a 20C/40T machine, the benefits are tremendous. Cycles render preparation time went from 40min to 8min. Might be worth benchmarking this on Linux nonetheless.

Did you restart the render completely after changing the parameter? because it wont update automatically, Id like to see a picture of it being worse it might help diagnose the problem

Ive been testing with denoising the light passes instead of the images and it does a significantly better job keeping the texture data.

One thing no one is bringing up is the built in cycles denoiser isn't worth turning on half the time because the amount of time and overhead it adds you can do twice as many samples. We had a 4k render recently take over a minute longer with the denoiser on vs 4x the samples.

Pretty sure the random node doesnt work in eevee, What engine are you using? Also in cycles the random node doesnt work on lights unless @Lukas Stockner (lukasstockner97) committed his patch

I am not that much of a fan of adding features just because we can. It is not that commonly requested, and even less often seriously requested. We do have more users of Fermi cards than people who has both AMD and NVidia cards.

The difference is not just in CPU vs. GPU. Try rendering hair with minimal pixel width. Last time i've compared CUDA with OpenCL they looked quite different (they are likely converging to the same result, but this makes such a heterogeneous rending useless for quick previews).

If there were no (known) issues i probably wouldn't care that much. But for until this works stable on developers machines (who are much more likely to have OpenCL+CUDA) this is definitely not a type of pandora box i want to be opened.

It is impossible to stress how important this is. Most people dont understand enabling CPU+GPU uses nearly twice the power to render 3 seconds faster. If this is not optimized blender is solely responsible for global warming xD
