@Samarth kapoor (tiltanimation) Since your computer crashes this is most likely caused by the graphics driver. Please try the driver version suggested by @derek barker (lordodin) (441.66). If the crash is caused by the driver there's usually not much that we can do, except waiting for a patched version from the vendor.
@Jeroen Bakker (jbakker) Does this issue with an RTX card and the current driver version sound familiar?

The plan is to let each GPU render many small tiles at once. Different tile sizes or subdivision would still constrain the tile shape to be rectangular which doesn't always fit well.

On some of the larger scenes that I threw at it on a 20C/40T machine, the benefits are tremendous. Cycles render preparation time went from 40min to 8min. Might be worth benchmarking this on Linux nonetheless.

Did you restart the render completely after changing the parameter? because it wont update automatically, Id like to see a picture of it being worse it might help diagnose the problem

Ive been testing with denoising the light passes instead of the images and it does a significantly better job keeping the texture data.

One thing no one is bringing up is the built in cycles denoiser isn't worth turning on half the time because the amount of time and overhead it adds you can do twice as many samples. We had a 4k render recently take over a minute longer with the denoiser on vs 4x the samples.

I am not that much of a fan of adding features just because we can. It is not that commonly requested, and even less often seriously requested. We do have more users of Fermi cards than people who has both AMD and NVidia cards.
The difference is not just in CPU vs. GPU. Try rendering hair with minimal pixel width. Last time i've compared CUDA with OpenCL they looked quite different (they are likely converging to the same result, but this makes such a heterogeneous rending useless for quick previews).
If there were no (known) issues i probably wouldn't care that much. But for until this works stable on developers machines (who are much more likely to have OpenCL+CUDA) this is definitely not a type of pandora box i want to be opened.

It is impossible to stress how important this is. Most people dont understand enabling CPU+GPU uses nearly twice the power to render 3 seconds faster. If this is not optimized blender is solely responsible for global warming xD

That's exactly what happened with my card. Since I have one for display and one doing nothing I assume the one used for display had enough memory being used by other apps to dip in to the system ram

That's what it looks like.. thought single GPU only reports 6GBish of memory usage so not sure if it even goes in to system ram

I have been using this in production for a few weeks now and it is pretty amazing how fast it makes rendering interiors, There are also certain cases when you can use it for stylized renders but since there is no option to disable it on glossy or make glossy have more bounces it is near useless in those scenarios

Are tangents supposed to be that slow? they are horribly slow with a decent sized scene 90% of the render is just computing tangents before the render.. well over 30 minutes in some of our cases. And then the real render (Post synchronization) takes like 2 minutes

Did you take a look at the release logs? We removed the experimental kernel and added SSS and CMJ to the official one, because we fixed the increased memory usage. Adding such features can always have a performance impact on the kernel, we have observed that with every major addition. (Motion Blur, Volume...).

@Greg Zaal (gregzaal): Thanks for testing this! Now they question is, why this solely happens on Windows and Linux is fine. If that is a driver issue or issue within the CUDA toolkit then there is not much we can do at this point. GPU development is already a challenge, and fighting internal driver / OS issues is out of our hands.

SLI is never ever on, The GPU was idling around ~300 MB before the render, after the render the memory climbed up to 1225MB of 3072MB cycles gave the error and reported it was using 1287MB which is more than the total usage on Nvidia inspector. Thats all I have for that certain situation I will see if I can eventually replicate it.

If you look at the image I linked I used a program to show how much memory was being used on the GPU so you can see the GPU only reaches 1225 MB of vram being used so it isnt that cycles is lying to us, it actually didnt make it to the GPU before it crashed.
