this is linked to the fact to enable or disable cursor surface in preferences.
if it is disabled in prefs but enabled in the tool in the 3D view this is not working and a toggle is needed to activate it. apparently the property in pref is not well synchronized with the tool
the problem is gone when doing factory settings

there is "face by side" too. this is very close but the fact that we can chose the number of vertices is a better option that a first selection because you can do greater and then reduce the threshold.

What I'd like is to make them behave in a way that better leads you to that knowledge. Click on one and it becomes selected, then click on a second and then they are both selected, click on the third and they all are. Click on any selected button and it becomes unselected as long as it is not the only one selected.

If it was possible to press several keys at the same time the problem could be solved (1,2,3)
pressing 1 or 2 keys not selected >toggle to these keys and deselect other one
pressing an already selected key if other selected > deselect (pass if wrong)
to extend press the already selected mode + others. or press just others + shift
to expand (less used) press other modes and ctrl or why not double clic on others

I select with left click and unselect with right (toggle on). I was expecting a 0 tool selected. but even not existing. so I modified the select tool. click on nothing to unselect is by default. this is an heresy when modeling. using G to move is prehistorical. I do a select border with right drag so only on mouse and very quick no need tools for that just a little of logic. I don't see the interest to create some tools from existing functions add shortcuts to call them and pretend it's needed to have less shortcuts. with double middle mouse I can toggle edit. I mean I tried to explain me how people is working in their head. but it seems it's very different from me. but in a while you will the same as me. always like that

no I'm talking about reporting errors in blender help. because the procedure of editing help is very heavy.

I used it again and I will try to explain better. when you are using it maybe you want to see the result if you don't check vertices(by default this is checked). then having vertices and edge selection mode would allow it, but is producing another result. because vertex is activated. so considering the bmesh behavior, edges should be a priority over vertices and it should work the same. so I can deduce there is are some conditions:
if vertex selection mode do this
elif edges mode do this.
a simple modification would be
elif edges select and if (edge and vertex) do this.
I think the vertex condition is canceling the edge condition because it doesn't take into consideration the fact that you can have several select mode together. just an hypothesis but it seems easily modifiable and better to see well what you are doing. and with edge select mode you don't.
I was using it a lot because doing a tool to slide and join vertices and edges.

personally I get back maximize to ctrl+up arrow because conflict with node wrangler too, 6 months ago. that the kind of changes in keys that was far from logical. someone changing shortcut should know all keys before to change them. and still ctrl+space for autocomplete like in 2.7

yes keeping space between keyframes and another point to get a list of selected frames. because without this, this is difficult to put some functions in addons to work on several keyframes at once. someone did a little addon, using fcurves. this moving selected points (selected keyframes) and it keeps the space. but if you want to move several frames further that a next key, you are doing nodes in your curves. because this is not a cut just a move. watching the API you see there is no cutting function using Fcurves. but in dopesheet or timeline this is possible. but now the problem become the lack of possibility with selection.

I have a key reappearing even when the addon is totally uninstall. I even purge py cache (to see if any effect). It should be a problem in user.pref. but really I don't get it and still reading more infos. I found this https://blenderartists.org/t/key-config-confusion/637985/4 the last comment. it is maybe a little hard, and maybe he didn't understand how it's working. but please provide more clear info about all this. I can disable the key but not erase it. and it's getting back when I uninstall another addon with the same class in. so I changed the name class. no effect.
I found the actual help was in 2.73 and maybe before. this is a good example but plz do more that put 2.8 in the BL at first. I watch several "multi" addons and they are all reporting some issues about this. so with my little beginner level it's just a pita

I think this is a high priority subject around keys save and more clear information about this
I tried to modify a key and at the same add another one. I had to change addon_keymaps to user_keymaps = [] but I could not register the other shortcut at the same time so I put user_keymaps in the settings too and I get back and all the default keys in mesh of all maps were erased. I had a save. but doing this because my shortcut was never registred. I see kmi.active=True on old scripts but I never found an explanation. some people use timers other handlers and I saw an update on a property from addon pref. why to go there? well I'm still a noob but it's not possible to improve this to be more easy to use? I think this is a priority as the fact to have new keys in new versions added to own keys config. I don't show the answer of Brecht about this again...I saw a script to find duplicates that's a good begining

I did my own profile like this but now there is no way to have last shortcut updates when I use a more recent version of Blender


Before I modified directly 2.8 profil (default one) and new shortcuts were updated. but at some updates I lose all my shortcuts. it happened to me maybe five times. so that's why I created my own profile, but now I have this new problem.

I did a ctrl tab under my own settings and was not working under 2.8 keymap. then I remember this problem of default interface on 2.8 not appearing on other keymaps. imagine a non confirmed user dealing with this. a nightmare. more when adding new keys in 2.8 like new outliner shortcuts they are not added to other shortcut keypmaps. imagine the deal to check every new changes by hand. example in text editor the new add comment toggle. this is an absolute priority in fact when dealing with millions of users and 2.8 shortcuts are far to be logical even for new users. but this is my own opinion

yes very annoying. the only way I found it's to go in pycharm and reformat text. it happens to me often after copy of text I think. maybe from another text editor but not quite sure. and after this is invisible in Blender text editor no way to see where indentation error is. and even deleting all space/tab before each line and being sure to put tab at each line is not enough...the error is still there but invisible. at first this is because a space as been introduced like the error is reporting. difficult to explain and reproduce but work a script under text editor and soon or later the error will appears. apparently devs are not using this. maybe it would be more advanced https://blenderartists.org/t/how-would-you-show-some-love-for-the-blender-text-editor/1163857/107

well I just saw that in 2.81 there is another windows {F7696674}under it and so we see the settings. exactly what I suggested to not have hidden settings running behind. for me this is the solution I was asking for. a trick but efficient. and william if you can hide so you can see it first...
