Short description of error
Pressing the Numpad dot key focuses the currently selected object in the Outliner.
However if the object has a parent (or even deeper in a parent-tree) the Outliner fails to focus.
Sometimes it scrolls to the parent sometimes it completely fails.
Expected behavior is to open all parents until it finds the actual object and focus on it.
This is very frequently used when objects are grouped into parental-hierarchies to simplify or organize the scene.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Create many many objects (~300-1000) and assign them parents. There should be enough objects to make the Outliner display the scrollboxes.
Pick some object in the scene and try to focus it in the Outliner.
Thank you

Check the attached file. The "FIND ME" cube is selected.
Press the Numpad dot key in the Outliner. It will fail to focus on it.

To me it’s working as expected (hence there is no bug), when selected object is in a parent hierarchy which is not open, it highlights its closest open ancestor…
Also opening the hierarchy could be noce, but this sounds like a feature request to me… Joshua, what do you think?
The user expects to find the selected object (like when it has no parent).
Highlighting the closest open ancestor is confusing in large hierarchies.
Example: car-->interior-->seat-->pocket
It also scrolls the view in a bad way, probably aligning it with the true object.
Looks more like a badly implemented feature or bug..

@mont29 is correct that this is not a bug, more a limitation. It does seem to me that it's something worth testing, though. I know I've wanted it to auto-open the parents many times.

outliner have loads of potential improvements, which are useful but not technically speaking a bug. Moving to a TODO now: http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Dev:2.5/Source/Development/Todo/Editors#Outliner
Thanks for the report anyway.
Sorry but to me this just smells like a lazy/incomplete implementation of a feature, not a todo...The idea is to focus on the object when pressing that key.
All situations should be handled. Missed cases qualify as bugs.
There are lots of areas wich doesn't work as good as artists might want to, but which works in the way how it was designed to which makes it technically not a subject of the bug tracker.
We would love to improve the outliner (ad other areas as well), but in this bug tracker we are mainly dealing with the actual bugs. We already have loads fo them here, and accepting quality bugs here would make the system really unmanageable here.
Don't worry, we will come to the outliner and improve it, it'll just take some time.

I have a patch for this (see https://developer.blender.org/T42716 for details)
This is actually in master now

.Also removed this from the TODO here ...
