System Information
OSX 10.11.1 and OSX 10.9.5
Blender Version
Broken: 2.76b official
Worked: 2.76 (2.76a not tried)
Cannot open the latest (2.76b) version of Blender on OSX
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Attempting to open Blender produces error dialog: "Blender" is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Trash.

Hello. Just created an account so I could add a note that I can confirm I just downloaded 2.76b official for OSX and got the same message. This page was one of precisely two results when I googled the error.. Running 10.11.1 on a mid-2015 MacBook Pro 15" (retina display)

I am experiencing the same behavior in Mac OS X (10.11.1) with Blender 2.76b
It unzips correctly and without any errors, then I copy the app into /Applications and try to run it from there, I get the same error as the OP.
However, when running the executable directly via a shell, it starts correctly: /Applications/blender.app/Contents/MacOS/blender

I also have this problem under OSX 10.11.1.
I have discovered one strange thing. When I download Blender archive, unzip it inside Downloads folder and start blender.app from there - it works. I can now move it to Applications folder and it still works from there.
But... when I download, unzip, move first to Applications folder and now start from there - I get an error.
This seems to be a problem with compliance to OSX security. In lieu of an early fix, there is a workaround.
In System Preferences, Security & Privacy, select Allow apps downloaded from anywhere. Save settings. Open Blender.
This is not the place to discuss the merits of OSX security settings, but I'd recommend setting them back to how they were before. Once Blender has been opened, OSX security will not prevent it from opening a second time.

Please re-download 2.76b and retest this.
I just re-downloaded and tested and nothing changed. I still get the error when I try to open from Applications folder.
Downloaded from the main link (not the mirrors). It now works on both 10.11.1 and 10.9.5.
(For the record--OSX Security settings: "Allow apps downloaded from Mac App Store and identified developers").
Thanks.
I tried again downloading from main link. I have the same error when I unzip, move to Applications folder and start Blender from there. Nothing changed.
I have the same OSX Security settings: "Allow apps downloaded from Mac App Store and identified developers" as Rob Waite.
@RJW: Do you start Blender from Downloads, Desktop or Applications? Because, as I said earlier, when I first start Blender from Downloads I have no error. I can now move Blender to Applications folder and use it.
But people most often put applications to Applications folder. And when you do it before starting Blender, you get an error that the file is damaged.
Just a side note - this problem was earlier with one release already. 1 or 2 releases ago as I recall.
@mallow: after unzipping I moved the blender-2.76b... folder to applications and ran Blender from there. BTW, I never had any issues with earlier Blender releases (although I never downloaded 2.76a).
I wonder, did my "hack" that I mentioned above (Nov 6, 12:16pm), have any effect on the fact that the download now works for me?
I can't find the exact bug reported I was talking about, but I found 2 other reports about similar issue:
https://developer.blender.org/T42924
https://developer.blender.org/T45138
@RJW: I don't know about your hack. Maybe it did help you, but I never had to allow apps from any source. I had and have "Allow apps downloaded from Mac App Store and identified developers" and most Blender releases worked just fine for me. Not including 2.76b and 1 other relases in the past (not sure which one exactly).

Blender 2.76b was incorrectly signed and after that @jensverwiebe fixed the signature based on the same builds. Those where re-uploaded to the same location. However the mirroring had already started and It is unknown if all the mirrors carry the correct version at this time. If 2.76 and 2.76a also do not work for you we have a real issue if 2.76b from (http://download.blender.org/release/Blender2.76/) is also broken for you please report.
Blender 2.76 - starts without problems
Blender 2.76a - starts without problems
Blender 2.76b - file is damaged

2.76 works fine for my Mac with El Captain
2.76b is broken as described.
Can you test https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/10491635/blender-2.76b-OSX_10.6-x86_64.zip also ?
This one works for me.
Also works for me :) Thanks, Martijn!
Question: can we assume that this load is a "good release" or you need to recompile it (ex: to disable debugging, turn code optimization ON, etc)?
Hhmmmm, just a thought:
Yes, Blender is definitely not part of the AppStore, but Apple seams to have problems with Security Certificates:
http://www.macrumors.com/2015/11/12/mac-app-store-apps-damaged-expired-receipts-issue/
BTW: Blender 2.76b (from blender.org) is working here.
Yes the one I posted is the one I should have uploaded in the first place.
It is the exact same build as the other 2 and it is a good release.
All the issues are with the apple signing stuff and python cache files breaking the signature.
