Diagonal Screen Tearing in Blender Interface on laptop with NVIDIA Geforce GTX 960M card and 4k touchscreen. #47464

Dell Inspiron Laptop running Windows 10
16GB DDR3 RAM
4GB NVIDIA Geforce GTX 960M Graphics card (with updated drivers)
3140x2160 touchscreen

Blender Version 2.76b

When using NVIDIA card to run Blender in 3140x2160 resolution, objects being dragged in the 3D viewport are subject to significant tearing when they pass through a phantom diagonal line running across the screen. Also occurs to different viewport sections if they are being moved through that line. Only occurs in Blender. Only occurs at 4k resolution. Blender and NVIDIA are fully updated.

  1. Run Blender with specified graphics card and at specified resolution.
  2. Drag objects through an imaginary diagonal line running from top left of the screen to bottom right. You should see tearing.

Blender isn't controlling v-sync, this is likely the driver configuration and outside our control.

I got integrated card (intel) and nvidia external card (960m). By default it uses integrated card so you need to change it to use nvidia card.

This helped me.

Changing default to Nvidia card for Blender did not help me. Tearing still persists.

(Note- also changed default vsync setting to ON).

Chad reopened this issue 2016-12-30 10:46:01 +01:00

Sorry to reopen this but strength in numbers, and I can find limited information about this problem.

I am running an alienware laptop, i7, 970m and wanted to make sure this problem didn't just get dismissed as it is now starting to roll into other aspects of development, like the blenders alpha Armory 3d Player.

"this problem, diagonal line going across monitor top left to top right, over the view of armory blender player. using latest NVidia driver 376.33
https://developer.blender.org/T47464
I will note, my previous NVidia driver also had issue in that the gui of blender ran crazy slow,
http://steamcommunity.com/app/365670/discussions/0/154642447926384520/
upgrading to the above driver build fixed that issue but may have opened new can of worms here.
I will add that I have tried telling my NVidia control panel to use my built in intel hd instead of the NVidia 970m (laptop) and no difference still diagonal line"

More info can be found here...

This is a known graphics card issue. Do a simple google search to see the numerous people having this issue across many applications.

This is a known graphics card issue. Do a simple google search to see the numerous people having this issue across many applications.

I get that.
However, it doesn't happen in Maya, 3ds max, Unity 3d, Cry Engine, UE4, or countless other 3d tools. This is a name brand NVidia card.

If other programs on the Blender level have figured out how to work around this graphics card feature, then so should we.

New info on the problem...
When I plugin my second monitor it stops happening.

There has to be a way to isolate what is causing this. As I get time I will try different blender versions and see if the problem snuck in at some point to help isolate it.

To just say it is well know to me seems more like sweeping under the rug, when other programs work just fine. To me blender is now in realm of AAA software and so some things done in past might need to be taken more seriously in my opinion.

Can you try forcing vsync on for blender in the nvidia settings?
