Screen flickers / goes black/ red when starting up Blender in fullscreen via startup file. #82788

System Information
Operating system: macOS Big Sur 11.0.1
Graphics card: Radeon Pro Vega 48 8GB
Processor: 3.6 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9
iMac (Retina 5K, 27 inch, 2019)
Memory: 72GB 2667 MHz DDR4

Blender Version
Broken: Blender 2.83.9, 2.92 alpha ba740ad2abc6, 8dc95f61f3

Short description of error
The screen flickers/ goes black/ goes red for about 2-3 seconds if the startup file was saved with Blender in full screen. Opening the startup file's again after Blender becomes usable doesn't cause this.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Delete the 2.83 config file or start from Factory Settings
  • Start Blender and the splash screen is displayed correctly
  • Now Click the Green button at the top left hand corner to Maximise the screen to full
  • Save the Default Startup File
  • Reopen Blender and the screen turns red apart from the header bar which is displayed correctly
  • The screen stays red for about 3 seconds

The splash screen is now displayed correctly and I can use Blender so far without any issues

Restarted the iMac and restarted Blender with the same red screen error as above

Workaround
Press the Green Button so that Blender is not maximised anymore
Save the Default Startup File
Restart Blender and the splash screen is displayed (without the red screen)

This is my first bug report, so I hope I have filed this correctly.

Kind Regards,

Clayton

Please check if this happens with latest alpha build from https://builder.blender.org/download/

Is this a regression in LTS? can you check older 2.83 version that worked correctly?

I can confirm the issue. Usually, when you start Blender, it first loads, and then a window appears.
But in the described case, an empty window appears first, although for me it is gray and not red.

However I am not sure that running Blender immediately in full screen mode is the correct and expected behavior in principle.

I think this is correct behavior. At least I saw report where this was reported not working.

I downloaded the the latest 2.92 link and ran Blender.
I then set the screen to maximum and saved the default.
Upon restarting Blender I had a red screen flash for about 0.5 seconds, then went grey then a second red screen for about 0.5 seconds before the splash screen was displayed. I tested this a couple of times and the same error occurred.

Now the weird part...

I ejected the Blender disk icon from the desktop and restarted again in full screen mode and now the screen turns Black and then displays the splash (which I am assuming is the correct behaviour).

I cannot reproduce the red screen behaviour as above, however upon restarting blender a few times I have noticed that just after the Black screen there is almost a red flicker before the splash screen is displayed.

I will keep testing.

Not sure if I am helping here !!!

Now I get the same scenario with 2.83.9.

Started Blender 2.83.9 in full screen mode and the screen turns black before the splash screen is displayed. If I restart it enough you can just make out the red screen flicker just prior to the splash screen.

I think I see the flicker more in 2.83.9 because Blender takes a little longer to start due to the add-ons being loaded.

2.92.0 is quick as I am just running from factory settings.

OK, sorry for all of these comments, but I have managed to duplicate the problem.

I ran BOTH Blender programs at the same time, 2.92 followed by 2.83. I then closed both down before restarting 2.92.

Upon restarting Blender 2.92 I had a red screen flash for about 0.5 seconds, then went grey then a second red screen for about 0.5 seconds before the splash screen was displayed. I tested this a couple of times and the same error occurred.

EDIT*** Both Blender versions react exactly the same way. Whatever length of time I have a red screen for 2.92, I have exactly the same issue for 2.83.

I'm not sure this (running in full-screen mode) is supported by macOS.

We create a (non-fullscreen) window and then toggles to fullscreen. This causes flickering.

I tried creating a window with a 'full-screen' flag. This allows you to launch Blender smoothly, without any flickering, but you can't then return to windowed mode, at least I don't see a simple solution.

Hi Richard,

How were you able to drag the window away from the menus?

I did however go to Windows > Toggle Windows Fullscreen a couple of times and the red screen would be visible for about 0.5 seconds before being refreshed with the Blender workspace, which may point to what you are trying to show me.

@claytonbp I don't have Mac machine so I can't check. I just want to know if yout problem is similar to report #83262

@iss - this and #83262, they have different causes, with different fixes, (but, yes, they are similar in appearance).

Hi Richard,

Sorry for the late reply.

They do appear to be similar in appearance.
